In July of 1990, my New York poetry friend Abby [not her real name] was in Boulder, Colorado, visiting friends.  I assumed her trip had something to do with the Naropa Institute—which I was curious about—so I asked if I could drive out from Portland and check out the scene.  She said sure. 

The Naropa Institute was founded by Allen Ginsberg and Anne Wald…
